Blackface minstrelsy became a popular form of entertainment in the wee nineteenth century. Predominately, minstrel shows were performed to crowds of gaberdine working pattern men, by smock actors who would use burnt cork, or shoe polish to sinisteren their shin and would create racist stereotyped characters of black people. These characters functioned to instill conceptions of uninfected favourable position into popular culture whilst at the same time oppressing black society.
